The Security Service of Ukraine detained the acting head of one of the departments of the Lviv City Council and a local architect close to the mayor, Andriy Sadovyi. They are suspected of participating in a corruption scheme worth billions of dollars.
Investigators report that the suspects have set up a systematic mechanism for illegally issuing permits for the work.
The law enforcement agencies detained the official and the architect while they were trying to obtain another illegal benefit.
According to the investigation, in exchange for $1500, the official guaranteed a quick review and approval of permits for the reconstruction of real estate in the historic center of Lviv. The official extorted money from an entrepreneur who planned to turn a residential building into a commercial facility to open a store.

During the searches of the city council offices and the architect’s apartment, the transferred funds were found along with documents related to the permit.
The wards of Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi were served with a notice of suspicion under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:
- ч. 3 Art. 368 (acceptance of an offer, promise or receipt of an unlawful benefit by an official);
- ч. 5 Art. 27 (aiding and abetting).
They face 5 to 10 years in prison with disqualification to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities for up to 3 years, with confiscation of property.
The issue of removing the official from office and choosing a measure of restraint for the detainees is being resolved. The investigation is ongoing.
I wonder if the investigation will find their boss, Andriy Sadovyi? Time will tell.
