The scandalous case of embezzlement of funds for cleaning the city’s lakes is gaining momentum in the Halytskyi District Court of Lviv. The main defendant, Oleksandra Sladkova, the former head of the Lviv City Council’s environmental department, is trying to delay the trial in every way possible.
According to the investigation, in December 2022, Sladkova signed certificates of completion for the cleaning of Lviv lakes worth UAH 758 thousand, although the work was not completed. In addition, officials are accused of illegally dismissing Iryna Korol, a lawyer at the Department of Ecology.
It is noteworthy that after these scandals, Mayor Andriy Sadovyi not only did not fire Sladkova, but on the contrary, promoted her to deputy director of the Economic Development Department.
For the past month and a half, court hearings have been constantly disrupted: either the defendant “suddenly falls ill” or her lawyer Ruslana Yukhimenko “urgently goes on vacation.” Lawyers see this as an attempt to delay the process until the statute of limitations on prosecution expires.
This time, however, this may not work – Sladkova faces 3 to 6 years in prison under Article 364(2) and Article 366(2) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
The victim in the case, Iryna Korol, has already recorded a warning video about the delay in the trial. Meanwhile, the Galician court is considering ways to counteract the abuse of procedural rights by the defendant and her defense.
