Sadovyi tried to limit the privileged transportation of pensioners in Lviv – the court declared the decision illegal
December 5, 2024The environmental situation in Lviv is a matter of serious concern – the local authorities are not only failing to solve the problem of air pollution, but are making it worse by their actions. This was reported by blogger Yuriy Sytnyk.
According to him, the biggest threat is polluted air for children. Sytnyk gave a specific example of negative changes in the city: “In 2018, protective shrubs along Stryiska Street, which used to trap exhaust gases and noise from vehicles, were destroyed in Stryiskyi Park.”
An analysis of open data revealed that the city authorities are hiding the real picture of pollution. Of the 517 chemical and biological components subject to monitoring under the Cabinet of Ministers’ resolution, only four are published on the Lviv City Council’s website.
Moreover, air measurements are carried out mainly at night, when traffic is minimal, especially during curfews. “The nitrogen oxide reading is 0.023, while the norm is 0.4, but this is a one-time nighttime measurement that does not reflect the real situation,” explains Sytnyk.
The expert emphasizes the particular danger of nitrogen oxides, which are more toxic than carbon monoxide. In traffic jams, which have become a common occurrence in Lviv, the amount of lead oxides in the air increases 8 times.
“The city is suffering from overdevelopment, although the general plan envisaged the opposite – de-densification and construction of 300 km of new highways. Instead, the general plan is being systematically violated, and experts are silent about the slow destruction of the health of the city’s residents, which is accompanied by the cutting down of green spaces,” Sytnyk summarized.
